Stop with the Pronouns

Names matter.

I was standing with a leader and four of his direct reports while he assigned responsibilities for an upcoming project.

"Take him with you."

"She'll handle that."

"Get those reports from her."

As I listened, something caught my attention.

He never once referred to anyone by name.

Only pronouns.

It may seem insignificant, but I couldn't stop thinking about it.

Now, think about your last team meeting.

When you referred to someone who was sitting right there, did you say, "Take him with you," or "Take John with you"?

Did you say, "Get those reports from her," or "Get those reports from Jane"?

There's a difference.

A person's name is personal. It communicates value. It says, I know you. I see you. You matter.

Pronouns may be efficient, but names build relationships.

This isn't about grammar.

It's about connection.

The little things often become the big things in leadership. Eye contact. A thank you. A handwritten note. Remembering someone's spouse. Using their name.

Those moments tell people they aren't just another employee.

They're a person.

John Maxwell wrote, "Relationships are at the heart of every positive human experience."

I couldn't agree more.

So the next time you're talking with your team, pay attention to your words.

Use names.

It's a small change that can make a lasting impression.

After all...

Who doesn't like hearing their own name?
